Etobicoke Mississauga Branch Newsletter - March 2002We're Busy, I'm Not Complaining The weather has been weird - it has confused bulbs, squirrels and some people including me. But thank heavens that's as far as the confusion goes. Our branch's activities have all been crisp, clear, and so far, well executed and attended. Thanks to the enthusiastic support of the executive board, we've been successful in all our undertakings since the start of our term in September last year. We held our traditional pot luck dinner and fellowship on January 27, a successful masterclass with Daryl Irvine on February 3, and an equally successful 2-day audition with Hwa-Ing Arianne Kwek adjudicating last March 2-3. As scheduled, the executive board held three monthly meetings since January. Next week, on March 24, another masterclass will be held, this time with Andrew Markow. As we await the arrival of spring (the real one), we see a number of exciting activities lined up for the members. On May 8, we will co-sponsor (with RCM) a workshop on the 2002 RCM Theory Syllabus. This will be open to members and non-members alike. Our Scholarship Recital is scheduled 2 days in May, while the provincial convention in Timmins will be held in July. I am particularly excited about the General Membership Meeting and Dinner scheduled for May 26. It is here that the Executive Board updates the members directly and gets to meet new faces. I consider this very important because it will a good opportunity for members to know one another better and to be able to exchange new ideas for next year's activities. So I should expect most if not all members to be in attendance. In closing, I'd like to remind all members that membership fees will be due May 31st. You will be receiving statements in due time. Please refer to ORMTA NOTES Winter issue for details. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Late Breaking News - There were 111 students who participated in the March auditions. This is a sure sign that our branch is becoming busier as we go along. It also indicated that we need more members to assist in future auditions. If you send students for auditions, we request you to assist at least half a day during the activity. - Anita Phillips e-mailed me recently. She wrote: "The book I recently read and which I think members will be interested in is Temperament by Stuart Isacoff (published by Alfred Knopf, New York, $33.00). It is the history of the evolution of temperament and scales from Greek times to the establishment of equal temperament. It includes a historical look at social and political changes during the development. It is really well written and I found it fascinating." - We encourage members to be more active. It certainly is worth the time and effort. If you want to talk about it, contact me or any member of the executive. - Congratulations to Mey Mey Tsang and Edith Zhang, students of Joan LeBlanc and Virginia Taylor, respectively, and Stefanie Pisani (vocal), student of Jill Kelman, who will represent our branch in the Metro Toronto Zone competition (Level C) to be held on May 12 at Euromusic. - Deadline for application for PCMA Certificates honouring 25 year members is on April 1, 2002.
