Central Toronto Branch Newsletter - October 2000

Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

Our 2000-2001 season is well underway, with more exciting events planned in the next few months. I was pleased to see so many of you at our Autumn Tea, held this year at the home of Marjorie Francoz on September 24th. Thank you to Gloria Saarinen for her presentation on 'alternative' repertoire for Grade X level students - it was an informative exploration of some little known works.

Our publicity efforts for the Clayton Scott Workshop (Dead or Alive?)are going well; we expect a full house on October 22nd, but it is still not too late to tell your friends, colleagues, and students about this exciting event. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Maria L. Case,
President, Central Toronto Branch

We welcome new members:
Elena Krakopolskaya (Piano), Paul Mason (Singing, Theory). Please add these names to your white Membership List.

Upcoming Events

Fall Workshop

Clayton Scott presents Dead or Alive? Making Music History Live Again! on Sunday, October 22nd, 1:30-4:30 at the Women's Art Association at 23 Prince Arthur Ave. You should have received a flyer in your last mailing, but if you require more, please call 944-9260.

In the final hour of Ms. Scott's presentation, she will be working with a class of children ages 8-12 to demonstrate her approaches to teaching music history in an engaging and integrated way. We have space for fifteen children, and although some of the spots are taken, there is still room. If you have interested students, please call 944-9260 to reserve a spot for what promises to be an entertaining educational experience. Children should arrive at the Women's Art Association by 3:30and expect to stay until 4:30; there is no charge for children who participate in this workshop. Don't miss this unique opportunity!

Auditions & Recitals

Just a reminder that the application for the Fall Audition is Tuesday, October 31st. The Audition date is Saturday, November 11th, and the Recital is Saturday, November 25th. These dates are a little earlier than last year's, so check your calendars, and mail application forms to Ford Barker by the deadline. Please consult your Auditions and Recitals Rules and Schedule (in your last mailing) for further information.

If you are submitting students, and can spare a few hours of your time to help out, please call Ford Barker at 964-6682. If you require additional application forms, please call me at 944-9260.

Teachers-in-Concert

On Sunday afternoon, March 4th, 2001, Convenor Frank Horvat has promised a repeat performance of last year's sensational concert: again, the goal is to involve as many teachers as possible in solos, duos, trios and other chamber combinations. We encourage you to invite your students and their families; it is good experience for students to attend as many live performances as possible.

Frank will be calling everyone in Central Branch over the next few months to solicit support for the concert, and start making up the programme. Remember, with more teachers involved in the programme, the commitment to perform need not be so daunting. So, start thinking about who you would like to make music with on Sunday, March 4th.
