Requirements to become an ORMTA Member:

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS for MEMBERSHIP 1. ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP a) Associate or Licentiate Teacher's Diploma or equivalent to that granted by the Royal Conservatory of Music, Western Ontario Conservatory of Music or any Institution referred to in subsection 9(2)(c) of the ORMTA Act (Statutes of Ontario, 1946, Chapter 131), AND documentation of successful teaching experience1; OR
b) an Associate Performer's Diploma or equivalent to that granted by the Royal Conservatory of Music, Western Ontario Conservatory of Music or any institution referred to in subsection 9(2)(c) of the Act, includingEITHER the completed written Pedagogy examination and Viva Voce test of the institution OR evidence of pedagogical training acceptable to the Board of Examiners (workshops, summer courses, master classes, etc.) AND documentation of successful teaching experience1;
c) a Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent degree, subject to approval by the Board of Examiners, including grade level of performance achieved, pedagogy courses completed AND documentation of successful teaching experience1;
d) have an established reputation as a distinguished artist in the field of performance or teaching as accepted by the Board of Examiners and approved by the ORMTA Provincial Council (Subsection 5(4) of Part I of the By-Laws).
1Successful Teaching Experience
Applicants in Early Childhood Music Education must meet the above criteria, have achieved the highest Diploma/Certificate in their field of music education (Music for Young Children, Kindermusik, Orff, etc.) AND hold current membership as required in the professional
association of the discipline.
A Grade Ten Certificate or equivalent OR a Performer's Diploma without the written pedagogy and/or viva voce examination OR a Bachelor of Music degree with no pedagogy courses2. Applicants in Early Childhood Music Education must meet the above criteria and also have achieved the second highest level of certification in their field of music education. Applicants must be a minimum of sixteen years of age and have been resident in Ontario for at least six months.3. PROVISIONAL ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP All requirements for membership with the exception of teaching experience2. 2Membership in this category is granted for a two year period to allow time for applicants to complete the requirements for active membership. The two year period may be extended under special circumstances. Applicants are required to submit a yearly update on their progress. SUBJECT AREAS OF REGISTRATION Members cannot be listed or advertise in a subject in which they have not had approval from the Board of Examiners Accordion Bassoon Cello Clarinet Classical guitar Composition* Double Bass Early Childhood Music Education** Euphonium Flute French Horn Harpsichord Harp Oboe Organ Percussion Piano Recorder Rudiments (up to gr.2) Saxophone Singing Speech & Drama Solfege Theory (all grades) Trombone Trumpet Tuba Viola Violin
*Requirements for membership in Composition category:(a) a Degree or Associate in composition OR (b) a Degree or Associate in another musical discipline with a 4th year University composition course OR (c) a proven status as a professional composer through published or recorded works. Successful teaching experience may be from students' results in the CFMTA Music Writing Competition, Music Festivals, or Contemporary Showcase Own Composition classes. Applicants in Early Childhood Music Education must have achieved the highest Diploma/Certificate in their field of music education (Music for Young Children, Kindermusik, Orff, etc.) and hold current membership as required in the professional association of the discipline. Applicants for Early Childhood Music Education should submit a letter of reference from the ORMTA branch where they currently reside, one from a distinguished member in their field of of music education or a letter from at least two parents of graduates of their classes. Applicants must be a minimum of eighteen years of age and have been resident in Ontario for at least six months. **Early Childhood Music Education - Pre-Diploma Membership:Applicants in Early Childhood Music Education must have achieved the second highest Diploma/Certificate in their field of music education (Music for Young Children, Kindermusik, Orff, etc.) and hold current membership as required in the professional association of the discipline. Applicants for Early Childhood Music Education should submit a letter of reference from the ORMTA branch where they currently reside, one from a distinguished member in their field of of music education or a letter from at least two parents of graduates of their classes.
