Garth Beckett, pianist, was born in Saskatchewan. He was a pupil of Lyell Gustin in Saskatoon and while there scored the highest marks ever awarded an instrumentalist at the Saskatchewan competitive music festivals. After studying abroad in England, Austria, and Italy, he returned to Canada to take up a career as a performer and teacher. This has taken him to most parts of Canada and many other countries. His work as a pianist is well known through solo and chamber music recitals and through recordings; his radio and television appearances have been noted around the world. For thirty years, universities in Manitoba and Ontario have exploited his talents in music, most recently as Director of Piano (1976-1996). His success as a teacher is demonstrated by the large number of his students who pursue professional careers in music and hold professorships at unversities in North America. They are among those who conserve the ideals of classical music and lead the way into the new millennium. Garth Beckett continues touring as consultant to teachers, examiner for Conservatory exams, and adjudicator for music festivals and competitions; students and colleagues from far and near travel to seek his advice.
