Biography

Alice Dearden began her piano studies at the age of 11, and taught her first lesson the next day -- sharing what she had learned with a younger friend. Alice enjoyed violin, vocal music and mathematics in high school, but by the age of 18 she realized that she wanted to be a piano teacher. She began teaching while she continued her piano studies, leading to an ARCT in Piano Teaching in 1986.

As well as teaching privately, since 1999 Alice has been teaching the Music for Young Children (myc.com) program, at first in Etobicoke and now in Bloor West Village. She appreciates MYC's emphasis on all aspects of musicianship: rhythm, theory, composition, ear-training, sight-reading, and making music at the piano. Her MYC and private piano students enjoy two recitals per year, and may also participate in the Davenport Music Festival and Contemporary Showcase as well as RCM exams.

Alice's other musical interests include choral singing, conducting, and composing. She lives in west Toronto with her husband, three children, and too many cats.
